I’m a business owner. I’m a professional social worker bound by a code of ethics and a set of practice standards. I have been told, by people who know better, that I can’t speak out politically. That I can’t cuss in public.... https://www.amnottheonlyone.com/leadership-im-professional/

Hey, fellow white folk: I really appreciate all the folk standing up lately against white supremacy. Really.

 And.

Standing up against something egregious is *easy*. You look to your left and your right, and you see lots of people smiling and nodding... https://www.amnottheonlyone.com/45150-2/

(CN: Graphic discussion of the effects of sexual assault. Really graphic.)
Hey, Betsy DeVos. Nearly every workday I have at least one extended conversation with a fellow survivor of sexual assault, usually acquaintance rape, that is either about that sexual assault... https://www.amnottheonlyone.com/with-sexual-assault-survivors/

Me: My family, the ability to read the books I want, the entire constitution.
You?

QOTD: In what way are you going to #TakeAKnee (and a stand) in the next week?

Me: #GrahamCassidy, #BetsyDeVos and campus rape. You?

We can tolerate everything except intolerance: The Paradox of Tolerance
What is the Paradox of Tolerance?
Guess what, Resistance: you don’t have to be tolerant of intolerance. Intolerance of intolerance has a proud history. The paradox of tolerance, first stated by Karl Popper in 1945,... https://www.amnottheonlyone.com/paradox-of-tolerance/

Kiteo, His Eyes Closed* (refusal to understand)
Democrats have long used the “Big Tent” metaphor for the varied sometimes shaky coalitions that make up the party. In the past, Big Tent has not always meant “take the needs of marginalized people seriously”, in part... https://www.amnottheonlyone.com/big-tent-social-justice-builds-better__trashed/

(Note: Like many of my social justice activist essays, this one is primarily addressed to white people who are exploring activism. The needs and goals and methods of white activists are often very different than their fellow activists who are people of color due to the effects of privilege)

The United States citizenry is in steerage in the Titanic. The Affordable Care Act “replacement” bill (insert name and link here) is an iceberg, and the only people getting a lifeboat from it are the .001%.  The crew is actively blocking attempts to turn the ship away from the... https://www.amnottheonlyone.com/trumpcare-great-american-iceberg/

This DW was originally created as a way to hide from a former employer, who after perusing over seven years of my LJ writings, conceded I had done nothing wrong but was "uncomfortable" with social media (pre-Facebook). Hence the user name that doesn't match the rest of my online presence.

My current employer is a fierce social justice druid who other than working me ungodly hours is a pretty decent boss. So welcome to my LJ friends, now that my LJ is gone.
